Finish - it's so often
harder to finish something than to start it.
Just recently, our five year old started a picture, a rainbow picture,
which required lots of little pieces of paper, cut out of seven different coloured
pieces, and stuck onto curved rows on cardboard. She had lots of fun cutting out all the
paper pieces but became really overwhelmed at seeing it all over the floor and
seeing all the empty rows than needed lots of glue and fiddly work to finish it. She cried and wanted to leave it there, till
big sister came along and helped and now it looks great. I'm often the same. I get really inspired to do some amazingly
creative project, get it all designed, search for the fabric, cut it out, and
then get overwhelmed, lose confidence, get busy, get tired, or get excited over
some other new project and don't get it finished. I have two such projects at the moment, both
that I want to do, but somehow the planning and the designing and the finding
of the material is more interesting than actually getting on with the sewing
and cutting and finishing. That looks a
lot more like tedious work than all the inspiring stuff. These two projects will stay in my spare room
as lots of bits of fabric and never be any use to anyone, so I need to get on
with them so they are finished and beautiful and useful - one for our bed, one
as a welcome gift for a friend who's been here 12 months already.
I am just the same with projects. Isn't it wonderful what a helping hand can do?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Claire. It certainly was lovely when her big sister got down on the floor and helped her. Now I just need to find someone to help me get on with my projects - that same big sister to mind some littlies every now and then, me thinks. I can't find your blog - do you have one? I'd love to look at it.
DeletePushing through to the end is never easy. But just imagine the joy your finished products will bring! That sometimes helps me make it through. :) Not always though...I'm sure I have a few unfinished projects sitting around as well...
ReplyDeleteYes, Jen, trying to imagine the joy! They're two rather large projects, a bit ambitious I guess, but it will be great when they're done. What are you working on at the moment? I love reading about your time in Africa. thanks for sharing and for commenting.
