A Yoke of Grace

Who is this Jesus,

a gentle and humble

King and Lord?

Who invites me to just come and find rest,

Who asks me to keep company with Him

Who doesn't load me up like the rest

Who is this Jesus?

Who offers to swap His yoke

for the ones I've carried for far too long,

Who stands with tools ready

to chisel and shape the yoke,

and me, to fall together into an easy rhythm

Who is this Jesus?

Whose carpenter hands

have made me a yoke

that rests easy,

that is designed for me,

that allows me to easily bear

the burdens He also designed for me

Who is this Jesus?

Who invites me to learn from Him,

to lean into Him,

To learn His ways, His heart for me,

to learn how to carry well this load

that He has given me

Who is this Jesus?

Who, in His mercy,

shows me the yokes I put on myself,

and the yokes that others asked me to carry,

Who, in His grace,

gives me a yoke that just works

Who is this Jesus?

Who lifts from my shoulders

those things He didn't put there?

Who lifts the weights and burdens

I thought were from Him,

taken on by me, in pride,

now thrown at His feet

Who is this Jesus?

Who wants to teach me

the unforced rhythms of grace?

To teach me how to live freely,

to carry lightly, to work with Him,

to follow where He leads

Who is this Jesus?

My Carpenter, My Yoke-Bearer

my Friend, my Teacher,

my Shepherd, my King

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me. Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with Me and work with Me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”  Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

  1. Yes, He is the good Shepherd who walks with you through the valley of the shadow of death and anoints your head with oil. And His rod and staff comfort you. Thank you Jesus.
