Is Your Marriage a Three Legged Race?

We recently had a three-legged race at our place with several pairs of competitors, and it was interesting to see how people worked together and pulled together or how they didn't. Depending on their personality and how well they knew each other, there was usually one person who was inclined to lead and the other who was inclined to let them.

It got me thinking about how marriage is like a three-legged race.  You're tied to this person you think you know, until they become ambitious or competitive or driven or passionate, and you're suddenly getting pulled or dragged along to go in the direction they set.   OR, you're the one that's driven and passionate and ambitious, and you're the one doing the pulling and pushing and they're the one being dragged along.   Either way, one person is setting the agenda and the other person is following suit.

OR, both people are driven, but they are pulling in opposite directions, both wanting their own agenda, and eventually something gives.

But a true Christian marriage is one where both people are pulling in the same direction, walking and working as one, not pulling or pushing or dragging the other, but both willingly working and walking together to reach the finish line.

And what's the finish line?  The finish line is to hear God say, 'Well done, good and faithful servant'.   Are we married couples heading for that finish line, or have we got our eyes on one that we've set ourselves, and are trying to drag, push or pull our spouse there?   Something to think about.

So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.  Matt 19:6

  1. Beautiful post! It made me think how me and my hubby would be in a three legged race. As of right now we'd probably stumble and fall. Your post opened my eyes on how important it is to work together, to be a team! Thank you!
